The xx are set to be this festival season’s hottest commodity, but the question on the world’s lips is simple; will The xx lose the plot on their second album like Glasvegas or will they rise to the occasion.

We should withhold judgement of course, as “Open Eyes” is an unfinished demo, but it would appear that The xx will be sticking rigorously to the formula that brought them success. Solemn lonesome vocals that display a mix of strength and heartbreak, minimal but intensely effective instrumentation (in this case a solitary guitar, and the odd percussive snap) and those serene coos tied to some deftly judged under-singing.

On this evidence they’ll be welcomed back to Reading with open arms this summer.
