Last night Blur revealed two brand new tracks via a live twitter stream filmed from a secret UK location. It was all very hush hush, but now the secret is out…actually, truth be told these “Under The Westway” had emerged sneakily during live performances, but now we have official lyric videos and studio cuts for both new singles.
“Under The Westway” is a the kind of downbeat but glorious ballad that Damon Albarn has built his latterday career upon. Don’t expect a huge vocal hook, this has far more in common with “No Distance Left To Run” than “Out Of Time”. One thing is certain: Directors will be biting their hands off to get this on their film scores.
“The Puritan” is a bassy and alien assault that whirs uncomfortably as Damon uncorks some wonderfully warped lines. Blur always believed in progression, whether it alienated or enlivened their sizeable fan base, and this neon fair ground waltz feels like a natural continuation of where Think Tank left off.
