Fresh from two electric and eclectic performances at Reading and Leeds on the vaunted Festival Republic Stage, Crystal Fighters are set to maintain the momentum of a busy festival season with three big headline dates in the UK. The Spanish fusion outfit will be taking their hybrid folk-gaze-tronica sound to London’s Shepard’s Bush Empire on the 14th September, before heading to Soundcontrol in Manchester on the 15th, and Glasgow’s Stereo on the 16th.
If you missed Crystal Fighters at Reading and Leeds, then you can’t afford to miss their three remaining tour dates. Describing Crystal Fighters sound is next to impossible. The Spanish seven-piece hop genres at will, but rather than creating a jagged copy + paste sound, or blaring sonic assault in the vein of M.I.A and Diplo, Crystal Fighters glide from one conflicting sound to the next.
Over the course of just one track, take “Solar System” for example, and you’ll jump from dubby infusions to crunching riffs, soaring synths, gentle folk flickers, Spanish chants, dirty house vocals, pitter-patter natural percussion, and pounding club beats…and that’s just the start.
No literally, it’s just the start, it’s opening track from their 2011 debut Star Of Love, at times it’s a grinding assault, at others it’s summer breeze, it’s wilfully diverse. The album is so varied and inventive, that it’s almost inherently inconsistent, but what feels strange on record, is daring and breathtaking live, and Crystal Fighters are genuinely unlike any other band you’ll catch on the live circuit this September.
