97. The Hives

21st Century Appearances: 2004 Main Stage, 2002 Main Stage

The Defining Reading Moment: Proving their staying power by returning to a heroes welcome in 2004 and launching into “Two Timing Touch & Broken Bones”

At the beginning of the 21st century, the “garage rock revival” era brought the world The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Libertines, The Vines and The Hives; consequently known as the “The Bands”. The latter hailed from Sweden and were known for their irreverent, but brilliant, live shows, drawing comparisons to The Rolling Stones, The Stooges and the Sex Pistols. Led by eccentric frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, the quintet were hardly off the radio or TV, thanks to catchy songs such as “Hate to Say I Told You So”, “Walk Idiot Walk” and “Main Offender.” Only performing twice at the twin festival, in 2002 and 2004, it’s hard to believe they’ve been away so long. However, they would certainly be a welcome addition to the line up in 2012. Siobbhan Gallagher
