93. Rolo Tomassi

21st Century Appearances: 2010 NME Stage

The Defining Reading Moment: 2010’s tent clearing, and utterly insane, wall of death.

Led by the Spence siblings (James and Eva), Rolo Tomassi make our list at number 93 on the back of just one performance, opening the NME tent in 2010, and what a performance it was. Fuelled by Eva’s fantastically varied vocals, Rolo Tomassi float seamlessly between chaotic Mathcore and a delicate, experimental sound. They very much have their own style and you will be hard pushed to find another band that sounds remotely like them at Reading, and you can’t say that about many of the acts who’ve played over the last few years. Ask us again in five years and there’s a very good chance that Rolo Tomassi will be even higher up this list. They’re a young band in the ascendency, expect to see much more of them. Tom Forster
