86. Jamie T

21st Century Appearances: 2009 NME Stage, 2007 NME Stage

The Defining Reading Moment: Beginning to lose his voice in 2009, only to have the rammed NME tent crowd scream back each and every line of Jamie’s back catalogue back at him; culminating in a ear shredding shriek of “Shiela!”

South London indie-post-punk cheeky chap Jamie T was nicknamed the one man Arctic Monkeys a few years back. Since then he went on to provide the world with two smash hit albums; 2007′s Mercury Prize nominee Panic Prevention and ‘one of the best albums of the decade’ Kings & Queens. Both created a loyal following and ridiculous amounts of national radio airplay courtesy of the  amazing singles ‘Sheila’, ‘If You Got The Money’, ‘Calm Down Dearest’, and ‘Sticks N Stones’.

Jamie T even went on to beat Jarvis Cocker and Thom Yorke at The NME awards in 2007 and 2010, charmer.

Having completely packed out the rather sweaty NME Tent back in 2009 Jamie T totally deserves this slot at 86, even if I believe he should be higher. Simone F

Note: Apologies for the poor quality video, but it does suitably capture the insanity and the visceral crowd response that greeted Jamie’s set.
