The Top 100 Reading Bands Of The 2000s No. 77: Flogging Molly

77. Flogging Molly

21st Century Appearances: 2011 Lock Up, 2008 Lock Up, 2006 Main Stage, 2006 Lock Up, 2004 Concrete Jungle

The Defining Reading Moment: “Drunken Lullabies” each and every time.

Flogging Molly are no strangers to Reading Festival, they’ve even played twice in the same day back in 2006 on the Main Stage and the Lock-Up. It is in the Lock-Up stage where the band has felt most at home though. Flogging Molly’s blend of folk and punk encourages dancing and general insanity much like their predecessors of the genre splicing The Pogues had done 20 years earlier.

In 2008, having effectively “retired” from the pit I remember a younger friend winding me up about this fact before running into the heart of the crowd for Flogging Molly. At the end of a frenetic set said friend staggered out, battered and bruised but with a huge grin on his face and that’s what Flogging Molly are all about at Reading, bringing smiles to people’s faces.
