The Defining Reading Moment: Filling in for Jane’s Addiction infront of a jam packed NME tent in 2011, and watching Circle pits erupt before the first bass line had even dropped.

You’d think after playing the festival for the fifth time in five years the Reading festival audience would have lost their enthusiasm for Crystal Castles, but you couldn’t be more wrong. With each passing year Crystal Castles have drawn increasingly more passionate and wild crowds.

2011 was a effectively a celebration of the band and their journey to the top of the NME Stage. The crowd arrived ready to party, and the band were in no mood to disappoint. Unlike past years, Crystal Castles didn’t offer the one dimensional 8-bit rage of their earlier years, instead they contrasted blaring visceral noise with considered tones and moments of gentle solace. Sadly, during these moments of reflection the crowd saw fit to unleash the most viscous circle pits of the weekend and Alice Glass, showing little restraint, dove headlong into the crowd. Oh well, you can introduce the anarchistic electro-punks to subtlety and texture, but you will never tame this beast, but then again, when its this much fun, why would you to? David Hayter
