Marilyn Manson
21st Century Appearances: 2005 Main Stage, 2001 Main Stage
The Defining Reading Moment: Arriving on stage before Eminem in 2001 at the height of his Anti-christ superstar media shock and awe powers, playing it straight, having the crowd fisting pumping from the word go. One the great Reading sets (2005 not so much).
With his pale and lanky goth gait, his smeared red lipstick and his aggressively sexual lyrics and videos, Marilyn Manson is a one off. With a controversial metal catalogue spanning 17 years, including platinum and gold certification in the USA, and an equally turbulent and eclectic personal life, Manson also takes his slick stage performances to another level with more than a smidgeon of theatrical sadomasochism and buckets of pure sleaze. His Reading Festival 2005 appearance was supposedly his final performance, but he is now back with a new album. Will Manson grace the stage of Reading in 2012? I hope so, it’s a true spectacle.
