This week we introduce our new feature The Strictly R&L playlist: a very simple concept, each week we get one of our writers to assemble a playlist of twelve of their favourite tracks from this year’s Reading and Leeds bands.
What’s the point? Well it’s a bit of fun, and over the weeks we hope to introduce you to a host of different bands you might not have gotten the time to listen to before.
First up to the plate is Reading veteran and Strictly Download editor Tom Forster with his selection. You can hear the full playlist on Spotify (click the link) or if that’s not your thing you can click on the song titles and hear them on youtube. (We’ll also be adding an on site player in the coming days)
1. The Offspring – “Come Out And Play”
The first single from one of The Offspring’s most successful albums Smash and without doubt one of the best songs from the punk legends back catalogue. It’ll be sure to go down a storm at Reading and Leeds.
All these years later, “Elite” is still one of the heaviest tracks from Sacramento’s finest. It’s also a huge fan favourite and should be guaranteed some good pits. Do not miss Deftones.
My guilty pleasure from this years festivals. This year they came storming back from a dismal second album with new record Hope and in particular, this little gem.
I don’t think it’s any secret on this site how much I loved Noah And The Whale’s latest album Last Night On Earth, and this opening track made my top 5 songs of the year so far.
I could have picked one of any songs from Pulp, it’s not like they have many weak tracks. “Razzmatazz” showcases more or less everything Pulp are about. Enjoy.
By all accounts I should hate Odd Future, they are completely juvenile, and vulgar for the sake of being vulgar. But beneath it all there’s a pretty obvious talent, and main man Tyler came out with a pretty decent album this year in Goblin.
I don’t quite know why but there’s no music that draws me in like Ska Punk, anger and saxophone just seems to go hand in hand. In Capdown you’ll find your fix of it for Reading and Leeds.
For anyone that hasn’t listened to The Bronx before, may this serve as an example of what they’re all about, and also an example as to why they should not be missed, they are sure to be one of the sets of the weekend.
Yet another set not to be missed, you certainly won’t hear anything else like this all weekend. Go on, it’ll be fun.
Frank is finally making his step up to the main stage this year, and you’re going to want to be there. To get you in the mood, here’s the brilliant “Redemption” off of his equally brilliant latest album England Keep My Bones.
I can’t really claim to be the biggest Elbow fan. A huge amount of their music passes straight over my head, but this, in my opinion, is some of their best work.
I tried to pick a Muse song that not everyone had heard, and although In Your World was a single, it never made it onto an album, which is a shame, because it’s a cracker.
Again if you missed it early you can listen to this week’s playlist in its entirety on Spotify: Strictly RandL Playlist
