Singer-songwriter Devin, formally none as Devin Therriault, is one of the brilliant, but rare, New Yorkers with a vintage lo-fi rock and roll sound. Having first experimented with music in his Brooklyn apartment by screaming Chuck Berry songs into his computer microphone, before a housemate told him to sort his shit out. From that day on, Devin started playing with pro-tools and creating his dirty punk rock sound. He plays all the instruments and sings himself on record, but live he has a full band (so we hear).
In 2009 Devin created a band called Devin And The Little Angels, where they began to get a far bit of interest from playing a monthly underground show called Personality Crisis. From those days onwards Devin was booked to play most of the cool New York hotspots, like The Mercury Lounge (played along side Mona) The Studio at Webster Hall and Lit lounge. He even managing to play along side established bands like Surfer Blood and The Books during Culture Shock Festival at SUNY Purchase College.
Devin performed at CMJ Music Marathon 2010 with The Postelles at the Neon Gold Records/Plugged In/Chess Club records showcase to rave reviews and multiple A&R types from both the UK and America. Devin’s home demo ‘You’re Mine’ was spread like wildfire across the UK music industry, everyone wanted a piece of Devin’s vintage rock n roll. The buzz died down after signing with Frenchkiss (Passion Pit, The Drums.) The charismatic performer has been creating quite an impact over in the UK again, with the re-mastered ‘You’re Mine’ impressing over at 6 Music while becoming Record Of The Week on XFM. Devin is supporting The Drums at The Roundhouse later this month, then he has a show at Dalston hunt Shacklewell Arm with support from Strictly New Band Sissy & The Blisters, and then Club NME at KOKO. These are his only UK dates, so get involved.
November 2011 saw Devin release his three track 7” EP ‘You’re Mine’, which to be honest, seems to have completed flown under the radar, firmly underrated. Lead single ‘You’re Mine’, which was actually one of Devin 2009 home demos, which has now been transformed into a louder, retro, full throttle paced song, compacted with jamming beats. With even more fast action than ‘You’re Mine’, it is almost impossible not to dance around, and sweat big during ‘Thing On Your Mind,’ which goes full throttle, and during Devin live sets ‘Thing On Your Mind’ has happened to be the that one staple song live. Devin, not only can do the fast – swing around until your stomach can stand no more style, but he manages to master the fuzzy downpoints during the rather big chorused ‘Black and Blue.’ If only the début ‘You’re Mine’ was perhaps one or two tracks longer, three songs are nowhere near enough to satisfy the dirty swagger of Devin. In the meantime Devin’s début album ROMANCING is out in April via Frenchkiss. Simone F
Buzz: Brooklyn may be filled with indie, showgaze music, but Devin’s swagger he is about to put New York rock n roll back on the taxi.
