DIY Duo Andy (guitar and vocals) and Craig (drums) have been making music since their mid teens, they are now on board with a full backing live band Doran (guitar) and Mathew (bass), and currently signed to Dead Oceans, where they have just released their début album.
This year alone has seen a high increase of the 80′s chilliwave lo-fi bands; Gauntlet Hair are no different, they too have created this DIY sounding lo-noise pop whilst fiddling with the decay of the post-punk era. You could actually call Gauntlet Hair an unclassified experimental genre, my iTunes library simply labeled them 131. What is a genre anyway?
Gauntlet Hair have a hint of WU LYF about them, by making the lyrics hard to understanding or hear with the arty echo of Animal Collective.Their self titled début album saw them soaking their way into the 80′s nostalgia pack. Songs such as the ever spacey ”Top Bunk”, alongside ”Lights Out” and ”Keep Time’, have a shuttled layered thunder bolt of booty shaking punk-wave riffage, surrounded by cloudy handclap tempos, waving into murky echoed shoegaze of the vocals. Buzz: I am not so sure if Gauntlet Hair are the type of band to create much of a buzz or to become ridiculously hyped. Their first few 7 inches records got their name afloat but perhaps Gauntlet Hair are more suited to become a cult unto themselves within the underground scene.
