Future Rust, And Future Dust #5

Submitted by on June 15, 2011 – 2:07 pm | 56 views

Oh, Look I am on issue 5 already. Can I get a internet high 5? Stop leaving me hanging, touch your computer screen. Go on.

This weeks new releases:

WU LYF - Go Tell Fire To The Mountain

(LYF recordings)

WU LYF the band who still refuse’s to allow the British press to grant an interview with them due to our ‘ridiculous, hyperbolic language’ (boohoo), firstly their attitude stinks worse than Amy Winehouse beehive. Secondly WU LYF make pretty good big music noise, which I am sure they are aware of, hence the two fingers with everyone related to the words music and press.
Throughout the album I did find it difficult to catch onto what Ellery Roberts was moaning about. “Heavy Pop” is an amazing song filled with all these neon fuelled disturbing emotional vocals.  WU LYF have even produced a sort of ballad (“Such A Sad Puppy Dog”) perfect for Sunday church services, well maybe if Ellery calmed down his death tone of voice. “Dirt” is the song, I could imagine being played as the world falls apart with war and hate, while WU LYF stand looking down upon us, asking who didn’t believe in this ‘thing’ they want us to believe in.

“Concrete Gold” is a chilling, organ based song, with Ellery spilling out his guts using, yet again, the same tone of voice throughout (yawn)

Strictly Our Opinion: WU LYF recorded Go Tell Fire To The Mountain in a church (what rebels) with no producers (show off’s) to produce an honest anti everything record. I didn’t know what to expect from Go Tell Fire To The Mountain, however I do know that I never accept paying £7.99 for a record where each song sounds almost the same as the previous track. Ellery Roberts voice became emotional drained as the album progress, and I got bored. Yet I kept channelling myself to carry on. WU LYF are onto ‘something’ I just can’t work out what that ‘something’ is. When I do, I will join the cult of secrecy. [2.5/5.0] (Should have put the dog down.)

Sons And Daughters – Mirror Mirror (Domino Records)

Mirror Mirror sees Sons and Daughters move back to their early roots, gone is the catchy punk rock sound that third LP The Gift grassed upon us. Returning to their electronic psychedelia signature sound, Sons And Daughters recorded Mirror Mirror using only a 16 track (like WOW fact for you there)

If you read Future Rust, And Future Dust regularly you will know that I am a sucker for dark spooky goth songs, and  opener ‘Silver Spell’ hits my spot in more ways than one could describe. Hand claps and off beat harmonies really do get me going.

‘Breaking Fun’ is just the right amount of dark 60′s fun (I found myself thinking am I listening to Cat’s Eyes at times?)

Strictly Our Opinion: Music’s latest craze? Its daunting, but that is pretty much it. [1.5/5.0]

Album of the week (well sort of)

In the very first issue of Future Dust, And Future Rust I gave Friendly Fires – Pala album a paltry 3/5. I would like to re correct this to a full  [4.0/5.0], I feel guilty.
I have whored it out as much as the average eastern European hooker that sits firmly above the sex shops of Soho awaiting her next businessmen. Pala is a fun little album packed with quirky little influences that I have grown to love.  Having Friendly Fires perform on the main at Reading and Leeds this year should be a dancing pleasure.

Single of the week

Foster The people – “Pumped Up Kicks”

Having already been on my musical waves for a long time, Foster The People are storming American and finally the UK are beginning to take notice. “Pumped Up Kicks” still remains the single that gets everyone moving, almost a year since first released.

Now officially confirmed to play The Festival Republic tent at this years Reading And Leeds, if you get the chance to see Foster The People be prepared to be sucked in to this dreamy quirky world they have created.

Caught live:

Tribes- Dingwalls, Camden – 9th June

Tribes are my favourite Camden Band since N-Dubz happened, ok I kid. Maybe Towers Of London. Ok. I kid some more, well sort off. Moving on.

I feel like I have been banging out about Tribes for years to anyone who will listen. Of course Tribes only really happened last year, but the support has been rising around Tribes for years.

If The Pixies happened in North London in 2010, they would be called Tribes.

Dingwalls was sweating with Tribal fever, Tribes had the audience eating every last lyric to leave Johnny’s mouth. If felt like a huge home coming gig, one big party for the family. They melted the make up from the girls faces and gave the men a bucket of shower sweat (nice?). We all sang our little beating hearts out to ‘We Were Children’ ‘Girlfriend’ ‘Coming Of Age’ while looking across to the stage to see all members of Tribes smiling back.

With support from another hot tipped North London band Supernovas and Jamie T taking to the dj desks to play out a bunch of indie hits (keeping it Landan yeah bro?) Rumour has it a Sex Pistol was also in circle of the wild Tribes family, Glen Matlock who?

Strictly Our Opinion: Already creating a huge underground following, Tribes are ready to step up the guns of their scruffy indie grunge look and play The Festival Republic tent. How lucky are you? Very.

Arctic Monkeys- Sheffield Don Valley Bowl – 10th June

After being driven off the motorway thanks to the mother nature bitch storm or is it called Global Warning nowadays? We almost didn’t quite make it up north, I love storms, but not when sat in the back of a smelly sometimes tour bus when the windows just about work. The roof almost caved in, all this to see The Arctic Monkeys, were they worth it? Yes, yes and more yes.

The open air Don Valley Bowl had a roof, well sort of. Rumours have it, it was actually Leeds festival NME tent showered over to protect us from the weather beast. Does this mean I can say I felt the history of Leeds festival?

Anyway, The Monkeys walked onto stage and indeed took note from The Strokes to start their sets with the very song from the debut album “The View From The Afternoon” which felt incredible fresh.  We also got a rare glimpse of fan favourite “Mardy Bum” stripped bare.  Alex did actually confess to not playing “Mardy Bum” for such a long time, and oh my it went down an absolute wet dream, even Alex felt a little lost for words as we screamed the lyrics back.

The crowd myself included where indeed eating every word and every note the Sheffield boys played and said. They stormed through (not that I remember much)

‘The View From The Afternoon’
‘Brianstorm’
‘This House Is A Circus’
‘Still Take You Home’
‘Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair’
‘Library Pictures’
‘Teddy Picker’
‘Crying Lightning’
‘Brick By Brick’
‘The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala’
‘Cornerstone’
‘Mardy Bum’
‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’
‘She’s Thunderstorms’
‘Pretty Visitors’
‘If You Were There, Beware’
‘That’s Where You’re Wrong’
‘Do Me A Favour’
’505′
‘When The Sun Goes Down’
‘Fluorescent Adolescent’
‘A Certain Romance’

Support act Miles Kane joined the lads during ’505′, who Alex’s described as  ’my fucking hero’ (erm ok then)

Strictly Our Opinion: The Arctic Monkeys are clearly enjoying playing Suck It And See. Goodbye to the moody, face like thunder, expressions we witnessed back in the Humbug days and hello to the cheeky grins we where possessed with from the very start.

Peace.

Each and every record mentioned above is worth a trip to your local record store/itunes for, If you don’t go, I may just haunt you, I can do this. I am special. Honestly you won’t regret it (the buying I mean, not me haunting you.)
