Future Rust, And Future Dust #12: Riots, Fixers & Field Day
To all those taking part of over turning the high streets, homes, cars and people business.
While London has already witnessed, what I hope is the worse of the criminal youth activity. It saddens me that the rest of the England is taking part in ‘copycat’ riots.
When has it ever been morally correct to ransack a business? Burn cars and set fire to properties? I heard the thugs were saying ‘’this is for my tax’’ or ‘‘its funny’’. When have teenagers ever paid tax? Did your mum send you out with a shopping list? What has the guy where you buy your bread from ever stolen from you? His business is over. Well done to shop keepers standing up to the thugs and over running them. The police were over stretched, no need to scream at them. In this day and age the police have very little power over ‘protest’, would you want to lose your job for hitting a mindless thug?
Yes it does happen everyday, but on the scene, the police have to think of the treat to public safety being mounted by the yobs. While, at this time, I think we should hate the yobs, but more importantly encourage local communities clean up the mess. This is England. The criminals will get bored. The police will not rest until every last person looting is caught. Good luck trying to explain your new pair of trainers over the next few weeks. Filth.
Album of the week

Blood Orange – Coastal Grooves
I have always been a music follower of Devonte Hynes of Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion fame, he has been in hiding in New York for the past three years writing music for other artist from Solange Knowles (Dev got to crash at Beyonce’s Mum house, pretty impression no?) Dev got to hang out with Jay-Z too. Cool enough for you? Me either.
Dev took to the very creating streets of New York on his journeys through the night. During his new album Coastal Grooves we get to dive deep into the seedy blurry inspirational nightlife he was watching go by.
‘Forgot It’ was recorded as a Lightspeed Champion record, but never appeared on his 2010 album. Very low toned. ‘Sutphin Boulevard’ is such a pretty-full song, filled with big quirky funky guitars inspired by drag queens with a sprinkle touch of Japanese pop. Pure soulful glamour. ’The Warriors’ is the one for those who have love for the tranny groovers.
‘I’m Sorry We Lied‘ see Hynes pick up the guitar, and he goes hard and fast, you get a sense of “help I am panicked” with his discreet tone of voice. ‘Can We Go Inside Now?’ is sexy, dirty, low based Electro meets a dirty, fore skin in the brothel window, open bassline.
‘Complete Failure’ is very creep on my sex. Give me a mirrored room, one pole and I will do a Kate moss (White Stripes) but I won’t be female I will be bi-gender. With painted on eyebrows and to much painted ‘hair line’, sounding creepy? ‘Complete Failure‘ is.
Disco Japanese pop ‘The Complete Knock‘ is just the right amount of Foals keys without being too quirky Oxford. Get your roller blades and leg warmers out Dev wants to Japanese disco vomit on your keys Foals, but then the game boy finds itself involved in this 80′s LSD world.
The last song on Coastal Grooves would be the perfect 80′s love summer anthem ‘Champagne Coast‘ as Dev heartily coos ‘come into my bedroom, come into my bedroom’
Dev’s voice is spooky electric, singing Coastal Grooves from a female low toned voice after having a throat operation last year.
Strictly Our Opinion: The retro sound Blood Orange has is amazing, very Prince (or the guitars at least.) While swaying my way through Coastal Grooves I found myself involved in Dev’s New York life. Tranny to the left, half dressed hipster to the right, pair of breasts to the front, below me is a broken whiskey bottle. To the back, well I can’t see the back can I? Oh wait, if I was in a sultry mirrored room I would. Who should we have behind me? I’m going to say a giant shaker. Now listen to Coastal Grooves with all the above in mind, spin around. You now have Dev’s nightlife. No need to thank. Keep spinning [4.0/5.0]

Gross Magic- Sweet Tooth
I am really digging Gross Magic at the moment, they’re already making little waves across London city. I only checked them out after falling into a pub and catching the end of Gross Magic’s set. I was torn between heading to the bar first or watching. I chose the latter. Having declined a session at the bar Gross Magic had me hooked with their low guitars and a very 60′s let’s get high hippy vibe looting around.
BBC Introducing
Fixers are one of many bands following their buddies Foals footsteps ranging from Oxford as part of Oxfords new music scene with artists calling themselves ‘Blessing Force’ bands include Chad Valley and Trophy Wife Its one of Oxford finest new cults, who needs Oxford University when musicals are making brainy rock ‘n’ roll?
Fixers were the subjects of a label battle between many labels flashing the big come here for this and this, yawn. Fixers are now signed to the ever up and coming Young & Lost label. Home to Everything Everything, The Virgins, Ex Lovers and Bombay Bicycle Club to name a few, in very good company if I may say so.
First official song ‘Amsterdam‘ has unbearably awesome melody which feels like a medicine cure for 60’s soft, spaced out, dance psychedelic brought into the ever creative world of the indie-pop
Be sure to catch them on the BBC Introducing stage headlining.
Future Dust, And Future Rust caught live this week:
Field Day – 6th August
Over crowding and shit sound system, can only mean a one-day festival in the middle of Victoria Park. Field Day is basically the chance for the Shoreditch darlings to show of their swanky cool vintage clothing while blabbing to anyone who is listening about their cool bloggage that has a few hundred wannabe followers ”totally rad’‘
Oh and the music itself, you know ‘cos its not called the Shoreditch fashion parade, check out my quirky finds. Most annoying when you see a girl eye beefing up the blouse that lays upon the chest of myself. Mine, bitch’. Where was I? Music right? Music. Shame the organisers, with their small canned San Miguel.
These London one day festivals are making huge bookings, gone or the days of only booking local tack, with worthy welcomes of some of the music’s biggest bands, Warpaint, The Horrors, Wild Beast mixed in with the ones to watch Chad Valley, Tribes, Cloud Control, Trophy Wife plus many more.
Eat Your Own Ears Main Stage
Wild Beasts
Played a stormer of a set, which was visually phenomenal. If the sound system delivered a much clearer louder, I am sure the set would have been more enjoyable, not saying I didn’t enjoy Wild Beasts, however I could have enjoyed it more then the Brixton teenager thugs walking home with a brand new flat screen television. Wild Beasts were sounding like a cheap radio rip, but with a view of sheer amazement.
Warpaint
Field Day belonged to Warpaint, the sun was setting as the girls ripped through yet another magical hypnotic set.
I just wish after five years the organisers would have dealt with the sound issues, at times I could have switched my iPod onto loud speaker and be louder than Warpaint or any other act flying this year.
Bloggers Delight/Lanzarote Stage in association with Dummy
Zola Jesus
Madness. Zola Jesus in a tent. Ridiculous, I say. She filled the Bloggers Delight tent more than quickly than if you shouted ”free shit” to the youths. From previous years, I really wished the organisers knew how to book the correct artists for the correct stages. Other then being cramped between my fellow friends, to be honest if our clothes were off this could have been the perfect News Of The World scandal, or maybe I should lower myself and say this could have been a great YouTube story, if our clothes were on. Right. Zola Jesus the lady with the lungs of an angel made sure all of those in and outside the tent could hear the gothic voice. The set was patchy at times, yet magic without the need to get annoyed at a female singer, Flo’Mo aka Florence of the Diamond fame should take note. You don’t need to over sing to the point of glass bottles being smashed overheads.
Peace out,
Simone
Each and every record mentioned above is worth a trip to your local record store/itunes for, If you don’t go, I may just haunt you, I can do this. I am special. Honestly you won’t regret it (the buying I mean, not me haunting you.)
