2011 Writer’s Roundtable
So what we know what our readers thought of 2012, now it’s time to see how our writers answer the same questions.

The Best Festival Of 2011 Was: Reading
Well I have to say Reading really as the only other festival I did this year was a Sunday at Glastonbury, but still, The National, Death From Above 1979 and Muse all helped to make it a great weekend for me.
How Will Reading 2011 Be Remembered? I’ll certainly remember it for Muse playing Origin of Symmetry in its entirety, which was fairly special. Asides from that I’ll remember it for the hilarity of watching Jared Leto’s ridiculous egotistical antics, having much more fun watching a band I hate than I ever thought I could have. As always I’ll also remember it for the bands I saw for the first time over the weekend, which this year included Best Coast, Warpaint and LetLive.
Who Should Headline In 2012: System of a Down
They have a good body of songs and would bring Reading the heavy headliner that it has been missing in recent years. Also, I missed them at Download last year and really want to see them.
2011 The Year In Music
The Best Live Act In The World: Arcade Fire
No wait, Radiohead. No… actually Arcade Fire. Please don’t make me choose.
The Artist Of The Year: Bright Eyes
Being a massive fan, I am slightly biased but I’m going to give this to Bright Eyes based on the quality of both their album and live shows this year.
The Best New Band: Wu Lyf
I haven’t been able to see them live yet so I can’t say 100%, but the album is so good that I’ll give this to them.
Album Of The Year: Radiohead – The King of Limbs
Subtle and sublime. My favourite release of this year.
Track Of The Year: Yuck – “Get Away”
I’ve not been completely won over by Yuck yet but this is a really catchy song that’s great fun to sing along to.
The Gig Of The Year: Thursday – King’s College London
They played Full Collapse in its entirety, as well as the majority of the newest album, No Devolución. The venue was intimate, the atmosphere was electric and the band were humble and friendly. Support came from Attack Vipers and Circa Survive, providing a great warm-up.
The Act To Watch In 2012: Young Legionnaire
I enjoyed their debut and am hoping they’ll come out with something else while Bloc Party are still in Flux. Pun intended.
Best British Band: Radiohead
The King of Limbs proved that Radiohead are still a relevant part of British music.
Best International Band: Death From Above 1979
The reunion of 2011 and one of the best performances of this year’s Reading Festival.
Best Solo Artist: PJ Harvey
I’m not usually a massive fan but Let England Shake was pretty special.
Best In Rock: Mogwai
In my opinion there’s been a lack of good rock albums this year. I did however really enjoy this year’s effort from Mogwai, “Hardcore will Never Die, But You Will” (not in least part due to it’s title).
Best In Indie: The Cribs
They haven’t really done anything this year but I’m going to put them here anyway because they deserve it and their new album sounds like it’ll be awesome.
Best In Punk/Hardcore: Letlive.
One of the most energetic live bands around at the moment, with some great songs in their arsenal.
Best In Metal: System of a Down
Another of this year’s big reformations, which resulted in a successful headline slot at Download. I’m hopeful for some more UK live performances next year
Best In Pop: Beyonce
I haven’t listened to a lot of pop music this year but she’s had some good tunes out and by all accounts triumphed in a tough headline slot at Glastonbury.
Best In Dance: James Blake
I’m not sure James Blake really counts as “dance” as such, but I really enjoyed his debut even if a lot of people found it anti-climatic.
Best In Rap/Hip Hop: Jay Z and Kanye West
Despite not being a huge fan of either artist I really enjoyed their collaboration for Watch The Throne. On a side note, I’m going to name and shame Dr. Dre as this year’s Worst in Rap/Hip Hop for the crime of delaying the release of Detox for so long that it hasn’t even come out this year. Someone should revoke his practicing license. B-dum cha!
The Worst Band In The World Right Now: Red Hot Chili Peppers
Just give up already?
